Vintage Coke Bottle Caps with Montreal Canadiens Players Shadow Box

My customer had collected a set of 18 vintage Coke/Sprite bottle caps with the images of the Montreal Canadiens hockey team from 1964-1965. Mounting one bottle cap, let alone 18, was a first for me!

The bottle caps were laid out, alphabetically, in a grid of 3 rows of 6 bottle caps. Each bottle cap was mounted using a ‘spider mount’ of archival clear polyester film; no adhesive touches the bottle cap and the mount is completely reversible. I wanted the legs of the spider mount to line up with a flute in the cap so it would be less conspicuous. Since all the caps were slightly different in shape and the flutes varied in position with regards to the image of the hockey player, a custom spider mount had to be made for each cap.

The customer wanted a nameplate displayed and as an extra design element, a Montreal Canadiens logo decal was mounted on either side of the nameplate. Mat colours were chosen to tie in with the team colours and Tru Vue conservation clear glass was chosen for its 99% UV protection.
A subtle, surprise feature was incorporated in the design… The player names and numbers were handwritten along the strips of mat that I used to line the spacers which separate the top mats from the mount board mat.
